AKC Proposal

Introduction

Owners of mixed breeds can enjoy the thrill of competing for titles in obedience, conformation, tracking and much more.  The Mixed Breed Dog Clubs of America (MBDCA) is a national registry for mixed breeds, providing many of the same opportunities that the American Kennel Club (AKC) offers for purebreds. We are not a mixed bred placement center nor do we provide rescue services.  Contact your local humane society or shelter if you are interested in placing or adopting a mixed breed dog.

We are also interested in promoting the future participation of mixed-breed dogs in AKC events. Consequently have made a proposal to the American Kennel Club (AKC), suggesting how this might be accomplished.

We invite you to download the Premium for our NW Regional and National 2009 Specialty event, to get more information about this fun filled and exciting event taking place in Tukwila, Washington on October 31 and November 1 of 2009.

There are two basic categories of membership: participating and supporting.  Those who own a mixed breed and would like to work toward a title should join as a participating member and register their dog(s) for competition.  All dogs must be spayed or neutered before being registered.  If you don't own a mixed breed, or don't plan to show, but would like to encourage the club's goal of responsible dog ownership, you can join as a supporting member.

For participating members, the club provides a set of regulations for competition that meet the unique needs of mixed breeds while still fitting in at fun matches and workshops.

In obedience, you can earn titles at the novice, open, and utility levels, then continue on for the mixed breed equivalent of an OTCh (Obedience Trial Champion).  The mixed breed obedience titles are MB-CD, MB-CDX, MB-UD, MB-UDX, with the "MB" standing for mixed breed.  These titles are earned in a manner similar to the AKC.

The conformation standard is designed to promote a happy, healthy family dog, and focuses on general soundness and balance, as well as excellent temperament and manners.  Any dog working toward a championship must achieve the MB-CD obedience title before receiving more than half the points needed for the title.  MBDCA champions are required to have brains as well as beauty.

Tracking titles are earned in a manner similar to AKC.  Effective October 1, 2004, certification will no longer be a prerequisite to competing in a tracking test.

The retriever instinct certificate requires the dog to show natural ability at locating and retrieving objects both on land and in the water.

The club also offers titles in lure coursing.

MBDCA strongly encourages responsible ownership of all dogs.  Dogs registered with MBDCA must be spayed or neutered.  MBDCA also strongly advocates at least basic obedience training for all dogs.  Training helps make a better citizen of your dog and better owner of you.

Since MBDCA believes that all dogs should have the opportunity to compete and earn titles, the club also accepts purebreds that cannot compete through any of the major purebred registries.

Handicapped purebreds may join, but their owners must provide a veterinarian's certificate stating that the dog is capable of doing the work.  Purebreds also must be spayed or neutered.  They cannot compete in mixed breed conformation but can take part in all other programs.

Local chapters exist in some areas, and formation of new chapters is encouraged.  Where a local chapter is in existence, members belong to both the local and national organizations.  The local chapter generally provides events for its members, and one of the chapters hosts the National Specialty each year.  For a list of local chapters and contact sources, visit our Contact Information page.  Currently the St. Louis chapter is represented on our website.

Where no local chapter exists, mixed breed owners join the national organization.  All MBDCA members receive "Mixed Reviews", the quarterly national newsletter.  For information about starting a local chapter, visit our "Starting a Successful Chapter" page.

Visit our Membership Info page for welcome packets and downloadable membership applications for the national organization and local chapters.
